MOST Technology Is Prepared for a Green Future
Karlsruhe (Germany) October 7, 2009 – MOST Technology is helping the environment by supporting to create greener automobiles. The plastic optical fiber chosen ten years ago significantly reduces the weight of the wiring harness. The entire cable weighs approximately as much as just the insulation used on an equivalent conventional copper connection. Particularly for electric mobility, every saving is crucial because all the electrical energy has to be stored on rechargeable batteries before commencing travel.
Another issue is "electric smog". From the beginning, MOST, the leading automotive multimedia network, has been one step ahead of other technologies. On account of its physical properties, an optical transmission does not emit any electromagnetic fields. Consequently, this simplifies the design of components against electromagnetic interference (EMI), such as eliminating the need for expensive cable shielding. MOST is a 'green' technology not just on the physical level of the transmission medium but also on the protocol level. For example, the architecture of the network interface supports smart power management.
The 80 vehicle models that have implemented MOST to date now include the first hybrid vehicles – the Toyota Prius, the Toyota Crown Hybrid, the Lexus RX SUV and the Lexus HS250h sedan. With respect to environmental sustainability and electric mobility, MOST Technology is state of the art and constitutes the modern platform for energy-saving infotainment systems.
About MOST Technology
MOST (Media Oriented Systems Transport) is a multimedia networking technology
optimized for but not restricted to use in cars. It enables transport
of high quality of service audio and video together with packet data and
real-time control over a single transmission medium. MOST offers transmission
over Plastic Optical Fiber and Unshielded Twisted Pair copper physical
layers under automotive conditions. MOST to date is used in 80 car
models and represents the communication backbone for their information
and entertainment equipment. About MOST
Cooperation
The MOST Cooperation is the organization through which MOST Technology
is standardized and refined so that it continues to stay abreast of the
latest industry requirements. Today it consists of 16 international carmakers
and more than 65 key component suppliers. They have joined together to
work with the MOST Technology and to contribute to its innovation. The
MOST Cooperation is prepared to embrace efforts to further develop and
standardize the technology for other industries and to establish the corresponding
work structures. The MOST Cooperation was founded in 1998 to standardize
MOST Technology as a global standard for multimedia networking. Audi,
BMW, Daimler, Harman/Becker and SMSC as core partners form its Steering
Committee. For more information see www.mostcooperation.com.
